A: There are many different types of bedding material available for your guinea pigs. It is really hard to choose bedding when you first get your guinea pig. All guinea pigs are different so it depends on what you think is best for your guinea pig. Here is a list of bedding and their bad effects and good effects.
Hay: Hay is a good bedding choice, it is comfortable and they have to eat it anyway. Since they have to eat it then you could buy it in bulk at a feed store.
Saw Dust: Saw dust is not a good bedding for your guinea pig. Saw dust can get inhaled buy your guinea pig. If your guinea pig inhales it then he might get sick. Saw dust can also irritate your guinea pigs eyes.
Pine Shavings: Pine shaving are only good if you cover it up with hay or some other soft bedding. If you do not cover it up then it could poke your guinea pigs foot or eyes.
Pelleted Paper Products: Pelleted paper products cost more but are great for your pig. Pelleted paper does not poke your pets eyes or feet. It will also save you a trip to the vet for irritated eyes.
Cedar Shavings: Never use cedar shavings they have aromatic oils that have been proven to be toxic to guinea pigs.
Newspaper: Newspaper is good for a liner. If you put newspaper in, then your bedding will be easier to clean out. All you have to do is roll it it up and throw it in the trash.
Cotton, String etc. Cotton and string are good as a nesting material. Cotton and string are not good for bedding.
